The reclusive genius

Contrary to popular opinion, the beautiful creatures we know as Unicorns are actually manufactured....in a futuristic factory.....and they can time travel.

Man Craig, these are awesome. How do you do them? Is it all done in photoshop, or painter? Do you start with a scan of something first? Each one is looking better than the last! You keep things just dark enough that you don't know what is going on (like the bright eye, or whatever it is in the shadows on the left). I love it!

Thanks B-man! They're done entirely in photoshop. I usually rough it out first in PS (usually I try and replicate a thumbnail I did on a post it or scrap). Then I block it in with a big chalk brush. Big areas of light and dark. Color and then duplicate the layer, and so on. Throughout the course of an image I'll replicate a layer, change it's properties(modify, color, overlay) just to see variations. Lots of trial and error and happy accidents :)

nice one! I love how the dude is concealed in the shadows, and is not the first thing I look at.

Naturally it rocks...but I have to admit to some skepticism regarding the time travel thing. Is it science or is it magic. I got to know because I've got one tied up in the basement next to the washing machine and it claims to be able to grant me three wishes. If it's science and not magic, the whole three wishes thing is a bust!

ps. have you ever done much oil painting? These have a very traditional style to them (and I mean that in a GOOD way!)

Fantastic work! really gets me thinking about composition and design!

Really nice sir! I think you're right about the composition though, moving the robot to the left more would help. Still, this looks really stellar. Each one is BETTER than the last.

Solid!

Using that pillar of light to frame the unicorn and the figure is a brilliant move. I love how moody and genuinely creepy it is.

Awe crap....I knew they were manufactured! Great illo Craig. Again, lighting is just amazing. Really draws me into that tiny door at the bottom.

Beautiful. And thanks for the notes on your process. Although our work looks nothing like yours we're doing the same thing with the layers. It's a hoot to see what the different layer properties do to a piece.

Hey Marco - Thanks, I find sometimes I have competing areas of focus in my stuff and I'm trying to improve that area.

Allen - never trust the beast! they'll do what they can to return to their own time. I haven't painted before these digitals. I've done a bunch of tonal stuff with charcoal and conte though.

Thanks Adam!

John-done!
